Migraine Headache Treatment
Migraine headaches are painful headaches that can last anywhere between seven and seventy-two hours. Unfortunately there are a number of different ways to cause a migraine headache, however, there are now a range of migraine headache treatments available that can reduce, if not eliminate the pain; you simply need to find one that works for you.
There are several types of treatments, but the best types you can use are the migraine specific abortive medication. This type of medication works by narrowing the temporal arteries. The dilution of the temporal arteries is always the cause of migraine headaches (though this can be triggered in a number of different ways). Another type of relief comes from medications that both narrows the temporal arteries and relieves pain. This is generally used to both abort migraine headaches and tension headaches.
There are two main types of migraine headache specific abortive medications. They are triptans and ergots.
Triptans:
Triptans are, of course, for migraine headaches. They narrow the arteries to constrict the blood flow by attaching to the attaching to the serotonin receptors located on both the blood vessels and nerves. This then reduces the blood vessels as well as any inflammation.
Ergots:
Ergots are also migraine headache abortive medication. They pretty much work the same way as triptans. The problem is that they cause more of a constriction, and it occurs in the heart as well, which causes problems for some patients. One should remember that the effects from Ergots on ones heart tends to be more prolonged than Tritons.
Midrin:
Midrin is a type of migraine headache abortive that also uses a pain reliever. This is the type that is usually used by people who tend to get tension headaches because it helps with the pain that starts in the neck. It works much in the same way as the other two, but is more effective if used during the migraine headache. It includes both the pain reliever and a mild sedative to help the medicine work with its full effectiveness.
When trying to decide on anything that may influence your blood pressure, you should talk to your doctor. They know how much your body can safely handle, so always be careful on what migraine headache treatment you decide to try!
